The other day I walked into the family room and forgot why I went there in the first place. Memory is troubling especially if you have a family history of dementia or Alzheimer's disease. The good news is that unless your forgetfulness is very severe such as not remembering how to get to familiar places, your memory loss is probably part of the normal process of growing older.
The even better news is that even as you can boost your heart health and your physical fitness, you can also improve your memory.
Your first plan of attack is to get more sleep. When you're sleeping your brain consolidates the memories of the day so you can recall them the next day. If you have a mentally demanding lifestyle, a sleeping well at night is essential.
Your second strategy is to write it down. Writing your tasks reinforces what you need to recall. It also leaves you a backup when your memory fails. Use calendars, task lists and grocery lists.
Your third strategy is to follow a routine. Doing the same things in the same way helps to reinforce your memory. For instance, putting your car keys in the same place all the time guarantees you are less likely to misplace them. Keeping the ketchup in the same place in the frig means you won't buy another bottle of ketchup when you still see one left in the frig.
Start using these tips and see how your memory improves. More tips in my next post.
